The Edith and Saul Schmidt Aquatics Department

The Edith and Saul Schmidt Aquatics Department is dedicated to teaching personal water safety to participants of all ages. We look to ensure that people are comfortable and feel safe in and around water.

MAR-JCC Aquatics Program, Powered by Swim Gym

Swim Gym has had direct experience working with JCC’s for the past 17 years. In addition to providing private and group swimming lessons, Swim Gym will offer the following:

Robert Strauss: Technical Director

Robert-StraussSince its inception in 1984, *swim gym* has been recognized, around the world, as a leader in the field of aquatic education. Coach Robert Strauss, director of Swim Gym, has taught in Miami, Florida since 1973. By 2011 more than 45,000 students, 80% non-swimmers when they first started their lessons, have become safer, and competent in the water. Coach Strauss’ experience is clearly reflected by every teacher trained with *swim gym* innovative cutting edge techniques; everyone has the passion and excitement required in a program in which the progress of every participant is measurable. Every staff member will create a friendly environment for their students, using pedagogical sound teaching practices that result in a successful swimming experience. Regardless of age, from infants to senior citizens, everyone walks away with safety, fitness, friends and fun.


Ricardo Monasterio: Head Swim Team Coach

Ricardo-MonasterioRicardo Monasterio is a former competition swimmer who represented Venezuela at the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. Monasterio attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he swam for coach Gregg Troy’s Florida Gators swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 1999 to 2001. He received four All-American honors while swimming for the Gators. Monasterio graduated with a bachelor’s degree in statistics in 2004. Monasterio won the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events at the 2003 Pan American Games.

Indoor Pool (Ext. 167)

This is a competitive, heated 25-yard swimming pool.
The temperature is maintained between 84-86 degrees.
Lap Swimming Policy.

Outdoor Pool

This is a 25-yard heated swimming pool. Lap swimming is available all year-round with the exception of summer during Camp Sol Taplin operating hours.
